What is a bank statement and when do you need one?
A bank statement lists every transaction on your account for a period: money in, money out, and the running balance.
It is the standard proof of income or proof of savings. The e-statement PDF you download from online banking is the same official document as the printed statement banks used to post.
- Loan and financing applications (personal, car, home)
- Visa and travel document applications
- LHDN tax reviews and audits
- Renting a house or business premises
- Business records and statements for your accountant
The fastest way: download the e-statement yourself
The exact menu names differ slightly between banks, but the pattern is the same everywhere:
- 1
Log in to online banking
Open your bank's official portal or mobile app and sign in as usual.
- 2
Find the statements section
It usually sits under the account menu: Statements, e-Statement, or Statements & Documents.
- 3
Pick the period you need
Choose the month or date range — for example, the latest 3 months for a loan application.
- 4
Download as PDF
Save the PDF to your phone or computer. That file is your official bank statement.
Step-by-step guides by bank
Pick your bank for the full walkthrough — including the actual menu names inside that bank's portal:
Need an older or certified statement?
Most online banking portals show statements for the recent months up to a few years, depending on the bank. For anything older than what the portal shows, request it at a branch or through customer service — banks may charge a small fee for old statements.
Some processes (certain courts or official procedures) ask for a bank-stamped statement. In that case, bring your ID to a branch and request a certified copy.
Got the PDF? Turn it into Excel next
If the statement is for accounting work — review, reconciliation, or business records — you do not need to retype every transaction. Upload the statement PDF to SEA Bank OCR and get Excel or CSV rows with the date, description, debit, credit, and balance intact.
Five pages are free every month, no credit card. See also the bank statement to Excel guide or the statement for loan application guide.
